"I worked a minimum-wage job and could pay rent, buy groceries, and save."
Yes. Food got cheaper. A 1964 minimum-wage hour bought less of a weekly grocery basket than the same hour buys today. Agricultural productivity is real. That is the only line on the receipt where the cohort's story survives the data.
Now look at the receipt that mattered. The Australian minimum wage went from AUD 0.79 in 1964 to AUD 24.95 in 2025. A multiple of 32x. In the same window the median Australian house went up 104x. A 1964 hour at the floor bought 3x more of a starter home than the same hour buys today. The gap is where the cohort's untaxed capital gain came from.
Wages kept up with petrol. They did not keep up with the country. Time to bust the fourth pillar of the Boomer Truth Regime.

The nominal hourly floor by year. Fair Work Commission indexes the National Minimum Wage annually since 1997. Pre-1997 the de-facto floor was the Federal Metal Industry Award C14 / Total Wage rate set by the Conciliation and Arbitration Commission.
What rent cost the floor

Minimum-wage hours required to cover one month of the national median rent. A full-time month is 173 hours. When the bar crosses 173, a single minimum-wage job no longer covers shelter.
What a tank cost
Fuel By The Hour.
Minutes of minimum-wage work for one litre of petrol. The Boomer narrative survives this metric. Petrol roughly kept pace with the floor. It is also a single-digit-percent line on a young worker's monthly bill, dwarfed by rent.
