"I worked a minimum-wage job and could pay rent, buy groceries, and save."
Yes. Food got cheaper. A weekly grocery basket takes fewer minimum-wage hours today than in 1964. Productivity gains in food are real. That is the only line on the receipt where the cohort's story survives the data.
British wages went from a 1964 bottom-decile manual floor of £0.28 to the 2025 National Living Wage at £12.21. A multiple of 44x. In the same window the average UK house went up 80x. Tuition went from £0 (Robbins-era grants, 1962-1997) to £9,535 today. The floor did rise. Every cost a worker actually carries rose harder.
The minimum wage moved. The country moved faster. Time to bust the fourth pillar of the Boomer Truth Regime.

What the floor was

The nominal hourly floor by year. Blair Labour introduced the statutory National Minimum Wage in April 1999 at £3.60. Pre-1999 the chart shows a reconstructed bottom decile of adult-male manual workers, escalated from the 1968 Hansard anchor. The reconstruction is documented in the method block.
What rent cost the floor
Hours Per Month Of Rent.
Minimum-wage hours required to cover one month of the national median rent. A full-time month is 173 hours. When the bar crosses 173, a single full-time minimum-wage job no longer covers shelter alone.
What a tank cost
Fuel By The Hour.
Minutes of minimum-wage work for one litre of petrol. Higher than AU or CA because UK fuel duty is the heaviest in the Anglosphere. Still a single-digit-percent line on a young worker's monthly bill, dwarfed by rent.
